I've got a little garden of my own at home, and I've just planted my seeds in it. What's the first story to be?' 'Well,' says Margaret, pleased, 'I know exactly the story I'd like you to tell for me. 'I can see you are longing to tell me the one you want. Who's to choose the very first story? 'You can choose, Margaret,' I say. You are sitting on the grass round me, looking very serious. 'Are you going to begin now, Enid Blyton? Who's to have first turn at choosing?' I look at you all. 'He's come to listen too,' says Catherine. A chaffinch carols loudly from the nearby hedge, and a friendly robin hops down already. She says she can't bear to! Skylarks are singing over our heads. There are so very many daisies that we can't help sitting on those, too. A picnic isn't a proper picnic unless we have something lovely to look at all the time. We can see High-Up Hill now-a steep little hill with a lovely view at the top over Through the little wood and out across a field. Down the road we go and round the corner. Where is Charles? Ah, there he is, and you are with him.

Aren't we nice and early?' Then all together in a bunch come Lynne, Mary, John, David and William. And just behind come Jane, Robert and Richard. Yes-here are Sarah and Catherine at the front gate. I know two or three are coming, because I can hear your voices down the road. I am waiting in the front garden for everyone to come. All the picnic baskets are ready now-four of them ! I expect they will be much easier to carry when we come back than when we set out! We can drink it out of little cardboard cartons, one for each of us. Perhaps one or two of you will be able to make your own names out of them ! I think, we should have a lovely picnic, don't you ? You'll want something to drink, of course, so I have made six bottles of lemonade, nice and sweet. There are two Swiss jam-rolls, and so/ many biscuits that I'm sure you won't eat them all! Some of the biscuits are very small, and are in the shape of letters. I think I can easily cut at least twenty big pieces out of it. I know you like honey sandwiches, but honey is too sticky and runny for a picnic. Then there will be plenty of tomato and lettuce sandwiches for those who like that kind, so we shall have a good choice, shan't we ? I thought I had better bring some jam sandwiches as well. And there are sardine sandwiches too, because I'm sure you all like those. Do you like egg sandwiches ? I hope you do because there are a lot of those. We shall be very hungry, I expect, by the time half-past four comes ! I'll tell you what is in the picnic baskets. I expect all of you did-and weren't you pleased to see that the sun was shining brightly, and the sky was as blue as forget-me-nots ? I was! You are coming at three o'clock this afternoon, so all the morning I shall get the picnic baskets ready. When I woke up I looked to see what kind of day it was. THE DAY OF THE PICNIC NOW the day of the picnic is here at last. Good-bye to you till the day of the picnic. There will be thirteen of you, so I shall have to tell thirteen stories-what a lot ! We'll have our picnic in the middle of the story-telling, which will be great fun. We will all sit down, and then I will let each one of you ask for any special story you want. Then we will set off to walk to High-Up Hills, and find a good place for a picnic. We will all meet at Green Hedges, which is my house as you know. I do hope you have already filled in your name.

These are the children I'm asking- Sarah, Lynne, Mary, John, Catherine, David,Jane, Charles, Margaret, William, Richard, Robert-and you, of course. You shall hear all the stories I tell at the picnic, and I will tell a special one for you, too. I'm asking thirteen children this time, and one of them is you. And now I am going to give a storypicnic because it is springtime, and it would be fun to have a picnic on the hills, with the sun shining down, and flowers everywhere. So we had fourteen stories, and it was a great success.
